Front page layout takes too much space and shows few posts

First impression (Macbook Air 11"): 2/3 of the page are header and filters, I can view only 2 posts at first glance. That's pretty different from the functional design of HN.
elcapitan on HNI think the large header takes up valuable screen space. The thin headers on Hacker News and Reddit are the right way to go IMO.
