Impressive technical feat and an interesting concept
From 3 comments
Congrats on a tremendous technical feat! Any advantage of using a full-scale FS over something like git-annex (http://git-annex.branchable.com/)?
akg on HNThis looks pretty good. I had a look at doing something similar (but wayyyyy smaller scale than full FS), and gave up as there was many dragons. Nice to see someone pull it off.
nicholassmith on HNWow, awesome project!

Reminds commenters of VMS file versioning
From 3 comments
I like it. It reminds me of VMS's versioning. I implemented something like VMS style versioning with Fuse and Perl for a talk/demo a couple of years ago - it simply created a new…
fuzzix on HNNice! Reminds me a bit of a better version of VMS's versioned filesystem. Also: I'm old enough to have used VMS's filesystem. :(
mosburger on HNAgreed, VMS filesystem was the first thing that came to mind for me as well. Seems rather sad that in 2012 we don't have that as a standard feature like we did back then. For the…

Fsnotify-style watching cannot give atomic per-edit revisions
From 1 comment
No, you cannot achieve atomicity using these calls. By the time you receive a notification the file might have been edited twice.

Good handling of large binary files
From 1 comment
Can this handle large binary files? That's been my main problem with storing backups of my servers in git, and it's one of the strong-ish points of git-annex. There seems to be…

tolmasky on HNNice. Why not use libgit2 (https://github.com/libgit2/libgit2)?

Does it version whole trees or individual files
From 1 comment
Does your file system create revisions of the entire tree, or only revisions of individual files within the tree as VMS and RCS do?† Because there are some problems with the…

When does a new revision get created (on close, fsync)
From 3 comments
Extremely interesting. I wonder: when does it "commit"/create a new rev?

ZFS and btrfs snapshots
From 2 comments
Sounds a bit like ZFS snapshots[1]. I always wished that would catch on a bit more, seems like it would be very useful. [1]: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ZFS#Snapshots_and_clones
adam-a on HNAnd btrfs[1] of course. There's also git bup[2] and git-annex[3]. [1] http://www.dedoimedo.com/computers/btrfs-snapshots.html [2] https://github.com/apenwarr/bup [3]…
